Principal's Update 2 April 2026
Dear Members of the Marcellin College Community,
There is something distinctive about the end of Term 1 in a school. In recent days, I have noticed it in different ways - in the tired eyes of some of our Year 7 students as they navigate new routines and friendships, and in the quiet focus of our Year 12 students as they begin to carry the responsibilities of their final year.
I was reminded of an article I recently read which suggested that this kind of tiredness is not simply fatigue, but a sign of deep investment: a reflection of the effort, growth and care that has taken place across a term. Beneath it sits something much more powerful: a quiet pride in what has been achieved and a strong sense of hope for what is still to come.
At the conclusion of this term, I will be undertaking a personal pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago, walking the Portuguese Camino from Porto to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. This ancient pilgrimage route, travelled by many for centuries, leads to the tomb of St James, one of the first apostles. For pilgrims, the Camino is not simply a physical journey, but a spiritual one - an opportunity for reflection, renewal and perspective.
In many ways, pilgrimage invites us to step away from the noise of everyday life and to reconnect with what matters most: our relationships, our purpose, and our sense of hope. I look forward to embracing this time of renewal, and I carry with me the intentions and prayers of our Marcellin community. During this time, Ms Suzanne Farley will serve as Acting Principal, and I thank her for her leadership and support of the College in my absence.
Sporting Success
Since our last newsletter, our students have represented the College with great pride across a number of significant sporting events.
Just a fortnight ago, our AGSV First V Basketball team competed in the Grand Final against Trinity Grammar. It was a high-quality and hard-fought match. Our boys played exceptionally well under the guidance of Coaches Brett Atley and Adrian Tomada. Those who tuned into the livestream or attended in person would have seen the tremendous support from our students, families and wider community. While the result did not fall our way, the effort, teamwork and spirit displayed by the team were outstanding. We congratulate the boys on an excellent season.
On Saturday, our First XI Cricket team faced Ivanhoe Grammar in the AGSV Cricket Final. It was a wonderful occasion, and I appreciated the opportunity to spend time with our students and families throughout the day. I am pleased to share that our boys were victorious. Their composure, skill and teamwork were evident throughout the match. Congratulations to all involved.
Shortly after, I travelled to Perth to support our basketball team as they competed in the Marist Basketball Carnival. I was fortunate to witness several of their games before returning to Melbourne. The team performed exceptionally well and ultimately won the tournament. However, what stood out most were the comments from other schools regarding the sportsmanship of our students. They were gracious, respectful and humble in both victory and challenge, representing our College in a manner that reflects our Marist HEART values. This, above all, is what we seek to cultivate in our young men.
We also recently participated in the AGSV Swimming Championships, which was a fantastic evening of competition and community. I extend my sincere thanks to Mr Brett Atley, Mr John Diano and Mr David Bellis for their leadership, commitment and example in supporting our students in this space.
Bulleen Road Access
To ensure that the daily operation of the College continues smoothly, the North East Link Project (NELP) has worked closely with us to maintain clear and open access to the school throughout the term. We are grateful for their cooperation, including the decision to defer significant works until the holiday period.
Please note that Bulleen Road will be closed over the student break. For those attending workshops or training sessions during this time, access to the College will be via Sandra Street.
Installation of Boom Gates and Fencing
Many families will have noticed the significant works taking place at the Sandra Street entrance. As part of our ongoing commitment to student safety, we have installed boom gates at this entrance and near the Functions Room.
These measures are designed to prevent vehicles from travelling through the College grounds during school hours. From the beginning of Term 2, vehicle access through the school will no longer be permitted while students are on-site. We ask for your support in adhering to these changes as we continue to prioritise the safety of all students.
A Time of Renewal - Holy Week and Easter
As we enter Holy Week, we are invited into a profound moment in the life of the Church. It is a time that speaks deeply of renewal, hope and new life.
Easter reminds us that even in moments of uncertainty, challenge or loss, there is always the possibility of transformation. It is a message that resonates not only in faith, but in the everyday lives of our young people as they grow, learn and navigate their own journeys.
In this world of many different cultures, traditions and life-views, may we walk together with humility and hope, trusting that the Risen Christ is at work in every sincere encounter, bringing light and life.
In many ways, this message of renewal mirrors the spirit of pilgrimage - whether along the Camino or within our own lives. Each step forward, no matter how small, offers the chance to begin again, to be 10% better and 10% braver, and to strive for the fullness of who we are called to be.
I wish all members of our community a blessed and hope-filled Easter.
