Introducing Matt as 1st Basketball Captain
1st Basketball Captain
Marcellin College is proud to announce Matt as the 2025 Captain of the 1st Basketball Team. A dedicated Lavalla student and proud member of Lavalla S03, under the guidance of Mr Dylan Li. Matt has been a consistent contributor to the Marcellin sporting community since his arrival from Holy Trinity Primary School, Eltham North.
Matt began his sporting journey at Marcellin in Year 7, playing both basketball and football, before choosing to focus solely on basketball from Year 9 onwards. His commitment and talent saw him make his 1st Basketball debut in Year 10 in a match against Assumption College, and he has remained a key part of the squad ever since.
Among his standout achievements are representing Marcellin at the National Championships in 2024 as a Year 10 student, winning the 2025 Marist Basketball Carnival, and being named Most Improved Player for the 2024–2025 1st Basketball season.
Balancing the demands of elite sport with academic excellence, Matt is known for his discipline and organisation. He trains up to four times a week, often with multiple sessions per day, while also maintaining a strong academic record. His success, he says, comes down to “good communication with parents, teachers, and coaches” and “planning weeks carefully to excel both on and off the court.”
Beyond the basketball court, Matt has received academic commendations throughout his time at Marcellin and continues to strive for excellence in all areas of school life.
As Captain, Matt is eager to “lead the team with pride and set a strong example for future players.” His vision for 2025 is clear: to help his team compete to win the AGSV season, perform strongly at the Marist Carnival as they aim to go back-to-back, and represent Marcellin with passion, discipline, and teamwork at the Champions Cup Tournament.
Matt also hopes to build a lasting culture of hard work and connection within the program: “I want to set a standard that pushes everyone to give their best, while guiding the younger players to carry the program forward in the future.”
For younger students, Matt offers wise advice drawn from his own journey: “Never stop working towards your goals, no matter how challenging things get. Success doesn’t come overnight—it’s built through consistency, effort, and belief in yourself.”
Outside of school, Matt represents the Diamond Valley Eagles, competing at the Victorian Championship level—a testament to his dedication to continuous improvement and elite performance.
Marcellin College congratulates Matt on his appointment as 1st Basketball Captain and looks forward to watching him lead the Eagles with passion, teamwork, and HEART in the season ahead
