1ST XVIII Captain - Nicholas Canavan

Congratulations to Nicholas Canavan from Redden House (Red_02, Mr Faelis) who has been named Captain of the 1s XVIII for 2025. A former student of St Francis Xavier Primary School (Montmorency), Nicholas has made an exceptional contribution to both football and basketball during his time at Marcellin College.

Nicholas began his sporting journey with Marcellin’s football and basketball programs in Year 8. His talent and commitment quickly saw him rise through the ranks, earning his debut for the 1 XVIII Football team in Year 10. His dedication was rewarded in Year 11, where he not only played every game but also claimed the highly respected Best and Fairest award — a testament to his consistency, perseverance, and leadership on the field.

Balancing a demanding schedule of four training sessions a week alongside his academic responsibilities is no easy task, but Nicholas manages it through strong time management, focused attention in class, and making the most of weekends and evenings to stay on top of his studies.

Outside of Marcellin, Nicholas plays football for St Mary’s Football Club in the Northern Football Netball League (NFNL), competing at both Under 19s and senior levels when possible. He is also proudly part of the Northern Knights program, continuing to hone his skills at an elite level.

As Captain, Nicholas is looking forward to leading by example, working hard with a fantastic group of teammates, and fostering a positive, united team spirit. His advice to younger players is simple but powerful: “Work hard, enjoy it, and cherish the opportunity to play with your mates.”

With a clear vision for the year ahead, Nicholas is determined to lead Marcellin to a successful and enjoyable season, aiming for finals and setting a standard of excellence both on and off the field.
